Why did you become a therapist?

I became interested in becoming a therapist in college over 10 years ago. I have had a strong intellectual curiosity in understanding human emotion and behavior. I have a high level of empathy and really care deeply about people. I recognize that many people have really great things they are trying to accomplish and struggling in some way. I really feel fulfilled helping others overcome mental and emotional blocks. I also recognize how societal pressures and messages cause distress for people and really value helping people accept themselves.

Why should I work with you?

My belief which is supported by research is that the therapeutic relationship is the strongest predictor of outcome which is why I focus on connection as my number one therapeutic aim. If my understanding of what you experience is strong we will get somewhere. You will find me to be an extremely good listener and that I ask really good questions. I can be very emphatic and attuned and also very level headed and logical. I find that young men really respond well to this balance. You will find me to be very clear, thorough, and transparent in how I explain things. I’ve been trained in many different orientations and will teach you strategies to help you make changes now. I really value your time and money and am passionate about making sure you gain something from each session. I work particularly well with anxiety by slowing everything down and making things less overwhelming.

What is your therapy style?

I provide structured outcome oriented therapy but am also flexible. I teach you ways to monitor yourself, challenge your thinking, and try out new behaviors. I am prepared to provide structure but am flexible and adaptive to your specific needs. I believe that you know what’s best for you and what feels right and what doesn’t. My role is to help you understand yourself more clearly so that you are able to be more confident in your decision making. I will work with you to identify your goals so that therapy has a focus and moves you in the direction of the outcomes you are trying to achieve. You will find our sessions to be active and you will gain perspective, feedback, and strategies.

What will a typical session with you look like?

The initial session will be an intake session and will involve me asking you many questions to get a full picture of your current reason for entering therapy and your history. Following sessions will focus on whatever topic matters to you as well as a review of what you are working on in therapy overall. There will also generally be week to week assignments between sessions and we will review progress on these assignments at each visit.

I’m just experiencing stuff everyone goes through like job stress, do I really need to be in therapy? I thought therapy is for people with real problems. Shouldn’t I just handle this on my own?

I have found that talking about common life stressors such as work stress is one of the most common reasons for seeking therapy. In my therapy practice I assist people with identifying being at risk of burnout and preventing burnout in many different ways. Increased self awareness and identification of feelings or thoughts that tell you that you might be headed toward a breaking point is very important. This increased awareness of yourself will help you to set appropriate boundaries and feel more empowered to say no to things that will push your limits. The ability to prevent full burnout will help you to perform better at work and prevent the negative physical and emotional consequences of burnout.
